Built and delivered during Black Summer

In the 2019 to 2020 bushfire crisis, our founder narrowly escaped a massive fire on Australia’s south coast. Many others lost their lives. Communities were left asking questions no one could answer quickly: Which way is the fire heading? How big is it? When should we leave? Are the roads still open? Firefighters faced the same gaps.

Food deliveries could be tracked to the minute, yet people in harm’s way couldn’t see the fires around them. So, in the middle of that season, we built and launched Bushfire.io: one place for official warnings and incidents, satellite detections, wind, roads and more, in near real time. It draws on emergency agencies, NASA, NOAA, Geoscience Australia and others.

What started with bushfires now covers floods, storms, cyclones and other hazards across Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe. The need keeps growing: weather disasters have increased five-fold in 50 years.
