Weather Disasters Have Increased Five-Fold in 50 Years

The World Meteorological Organization counted more than 11,000 weather, climate and water disasters between 1970 and 2019, a five-fold increase over 50 years. In 2021 alone, the international disaster database EM-DAT recorded 432 disasters affecting 101.8 million people.

We’re Taking Action

There is good news in the same WMO report: disaster deaths fell almost three-fold over those 50 years, largely thanks to better early warnings. That is the work we do. We gather live incident, lightning, satellite hotspot and wind data across Australia, Canada and the United States, and put it in front of the people who need it: residents deciding when to leave, responders on the ground, and insurers planning ahead.
